Jemima Senior, Communities Programmer at RA

“Alice has been such a fantastic artist educator on the RA’s Communities Programme, designed exclusively for adults facing barriers due to disability, health, or isolation. Her work on Make and Connect and Making Space brought so much energy and creativity to our workshops, offering dynamic and exciting activities that truly inspired our participants. From natural dyeing to exploring ways to develop their own artistic practice, and even creating sensory wall hangings, Alice’s sessions gave people the confidence to try something new. Her warmth, creativity, and ability to adapt to individual needs created a welcoming space where everyone felt encouraged and supported. It’s been a real pleasure working with her!"

Working with Alice was a joy!

Alice facilitated a Bundle Dye Workshop at The New Art Gallery Walsall on 22nd March 2025. All participants thoroughly enjoyed the day.

One wrote “Alice’s delivery was great. I loved learning about her background and work as well as information on different natural dyes and dyeing processes”. Another wrote “Alice was very knowledgeable and very engaging”.

Alice is a talented artist and a brilliant educator with the ability to engage with her depth of knowledge about natural dyes and sustainable art practices, and her warm and nurturing manner. When demonstrating natural dyeing processes and techniques using a step-by-step approach, she takes learners on a journey of excitement and discovery. Her enthusiasm and love of her specialism is infectious.

We look forward to working with Alice again in the future!"

Gallery Client - Creative practitioner & Workshops

Sophie Greenstreet, Engagement Curator, Henry Moore Studios & Gardens

Alice brought an abundance of creativity, textile knowledge & skills, & expertise across audience groups to the project. Proving to be generous in sharing a variety of processes, adaptable to the needs of differing ages & abilities, & thoughtful about the space, environment & parameters we had to work with.

The project included a series of community group workshops, creating a collaborative public outcome, & holding celebratory activities around it. Throughout Alice was dynamic in her approach to sharing her personal practice in relation to given themes, proactive in her communications & creating resources, & clearly gathered & relayed new understanding about site-specific relevance, while befriending the team & holding space for participants. I look forward to when our paths cross again!

Ioanna Korfiati - Community Programme Manager

“Alice helped us host a wonderful Wellbeing Day community event at the museum, running a fantastic workshop as part of which participants were encouraged to create their own mini textile sculptures to take away as objects that bring them comfort. The results were beautiful and the feedback from participants highlighted how enjoyable and therapeutic they found the experience. Alice was a real pleasure to work with from beginning to end; from her ideas and suggestions, to her planning and preparation, all the way to her warm, patient and supportive delivery. She contributed immensely to the Wellbeing Day being the wholesome, creative and relaxing experience we aimed for, and we cannot wait to work with her again!”

“I was incredibly impressed by Alice’s enthusiasm and professionalism in preparing and delivering the workshop making Textile Accessories at Leighton House. I was happy to see how quickly she found herself at home in our learning centre, from setting up the space and welcoming participants with warmth and excitement. I was particularly impressed by the research she had made on items in our own museum collection prior to the session, and how she included this knowledge in her presentation to ground the learning in our space. The participants thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and were proud over all the new techniques that they had learnt at the end of the day. We feel very excited by our collaboration with Alice Burnhope, and hope to find many more opportunities to work together again in the future."

"Alice helped us host several embroidery workshops to celebrate the launch of one of our new collections. We had amazing feedback from our guests who had a brilliant time creating their own embroidery masterpieces under Alice’s guidance. Alice is knowledgeable, calm and professional but also very fun and a real pleasure to work with – we would recommend her in a heartbeat and are already hoping to plan more events with her."

Charity CLIENT - Creative Practitioner & Workshops

Victoria Shearing - Project Manager

"Collaborating with Alice on our community nature-connected co-creation exhibition, exploring Lewisham’s growing green spaces, has been an extraordinary journey. Alice's deep understanding of both art, textiles and nature brought a unique and inspiring perspective to the project.

From the outset, Alice demonstrated an exceptional ability to engage our community, encouraging participation and fostering a deep connection with the natural environment. Her innovative approach to showcasing Lewisham’s green spaces through a co-created exhibition not only highlighted the beauty and importance of these areas but also inspired a collective sense of stewardship and pride for Lewisham’s greenspaces and what plants, gardens and gardening means to the participants.

The exhibition itself was a resounding success, beautifully capturing the essence of our local green spaces and the community’s personal relationship with them. Alice’s creativity and dedication were evident in every piece, making the exhibition both visually stunning and emotionally resonant.

We are immensely grateful for Alice’s contribution and highly recommend her for any project that seeks to blend art, community engagement, and environmental awareness. Their work has left a lasting impact on Lewisham, and we look forward to future collaborations."

Museum & WORKSHOP COLLABORATOR

Catherine Chastney, Freelance Historian from I Picture This

"I’ve worked with Alice twice, both times on six-week Arts for Dementia projects at The King’s Gallery in London. She is an absolute joy to work with. Alice brings lots of ideas and, essentially, she is able to communicate them to others clearly so that she can draw out other people’s creativity. She gives people a springboard for expressing themselves so that people who take part in her sessions are guided by her in such a lovely gentle way that encourages them to find their own expression and not merely follow a template. Alice also has plenty of energy and empathy that is so vital to working with people living with dementia. This makes her an outstanding workshop leader. I would work with Alice again any time!"

Jasmine-Karis Fontiverio-Hylton | Programmes & Community Outreach Officer

As an arts charity, we have had the pleasure of working with the lovely Alice Burnhope for the fourth time now, and each time more creative and successful than the last. By nature, Alice is instinctively intuitive, caring and thoughtful in both her approach to planning and delivering dynamic textiles workshops. Participants have easily warmed to her and have absolutely loved learning new creative skills with her as their facilitator.

Embroidery workshop participant

Sarah Hains

"Thank you so much Alice. Alice is an inspiring artist who has not only taught me new embroidery skills, but she has also given me fantastic ideas to see how embroidery can be more than words and pictures - it can be abstract and art in itself. The appliqué was really fun to learn and I hope to try it at home now. I thoroughly enjoyed learning with Alice and would recommend a workshop with her to anyone."

Natural Dye workshop participant

Simon Hooper

"I thoroughly enjoyed the Natural Dye Workshop. I've never worked with natural dyes before and it was great to share this creative experience with my daughter. Alice has put together a really well thought out afternoon. 2.5 hours flew by. A very good mix of explaining and demonstrating new techniques and getting hands on and practical. Loved it!"
