Repairs

Why invest in our clothes?

Did you know? 'Three out of five fast fashion items end up in a landfill' (Clean Clothes Campaign, 2019). According to 'Waste 'n' Away' sources state landfill space is running out, at current rates Britain has less than seven years worth of space left in landfills sites.

Our current fast fashion habits are both a financial disadvantage for the individual, as well as an environmental disaster for both the plant and people. Therefore by investing in our current clothes, building stories and attachments can we reverse this current climatic trajectory.

“The dress repair is great!”

I was very happy to bring a new lease of life into my client's garment, enabling her to wear her dress again and embed more stories and memories into the clothing she adorns. Both armpits of the dress were ripped, with one of the armpits having a 5 inch hole. This was mended from a secondhand linen napkin, creating a bold visible statement of repair.

“It is so fabulous, just what I was looking for, I can't thank you enough.

The darning patches and the pops of colour look lovely, and the patch is great, a lovely (second hand) fabric. It will enable me to wear my jacket for ages to come, just getting more beloved with each use. Thank you so much for enabling me to extend its life and use!”

I was very happy to bring a new lease of life into my client's garment, enabling her to wear her beloved jacket again and embed more stories and memories into the clothing she adorn. There were 13 moth eaten holes which have been mended with colourful darning and a patch out of secondhand fabric, creating a bold visible statement of repair.

“Alice has lovingly mended my dress using sustainable materials and amazing skill. I am so thrilled with the result! Alice is a thoughtful collaborator – she offered different options, with price considerations in mind, and checked in with me as she progressed. Receiving images of my dress-in-progress was a real highlight, making the journey, as well as the finished dress, both very special”

"I approached Alice to ask if she might be able to help me bring life to an old, slightly stained but much-loved dress. We discussed ideas and she shared sketches to help us decide how to proceed. The dress was mended with visible patches of recycled linen and highlighted with embroidery.

Toast Renewal Auction 2021

The apron had a large hole in the strap which I darned with an array of colour threads, to highlight the repair. Additionally, to make the garment even more practical I created three more colourful pockets, made from unwanted textiles and naturally dyed with foodwaste.

The coat had a large pen mark, which I embroidered over. Also, I created a detachable wearable pocket and balanced this with a decorative detail on the collar of the coat. All made from unwanted naturally dyed textiles.
