Earth Day Flag Collaboration

Artist Educator | Environmental Art Project | Sir Roger Manwood's School, 2021

To mark Earth Day, I had the joy of collaborating with students at Sir Roger Manwood’s School to create a sustainably made flag that celebrates the power of youth voices in shaping our environmental future.

Working closely with the students within the Eco Team at Sir Roger Manwood School, we brought Josh’s winning design to life. This design, chosen through a school-wide competition, was transformed using reclaimed tent fabric. By doing so, we transformed waste materials into a proud symbol of care, creativity, and climate consciousness. Working with the students throughout the design process allowed them to connect with both the material and message, encouraging them to consider how sustainability can be embedded in everyday creativity.

The flag was raised during a special Earth Day ceremony at the school, accompanied by a powerful message: Earth Day isn’t just about symbols, it’s about action. Through this project, students learned that even small, thoughtful acts—like reusing materials, sharing ideas, and raising awareness—can be powerful tools for environmental change.

This collaboration is a wonderful example of how socially engaged, artist-led practice can empower young people to take pride in their creativity, reflect on their role in protecting the planet, and feel a deeper connection to the world around them.
