Henry Moore Foundation Collaboration: 'Collective Forms' Exhibition

The autumn of 2024, I had the joy of collaborating with the Henry Moore Foundation as a creative practitioner, working closely with three incredible community groups to bring a special artist-led project to life. Over the course of October, our sessions were filled with spontaneity, vibrant colours, nature, new connections, shared creativity, and a deep exploration of Henry Moore sculptures. All of this was inspired by The Henry Moore Foundation year’s theme: 'Inspiration, Sculpture, and Our Natural World.'

Throughout the workshops, we explored Henry Moore’s deep connection to nature and form, using this as a springboard to tap into our own artistic voices. Participants experimented with natural dyeing techniques such as bundle dyeing, playful observational drawing, and painting with natural dye inks. Each session was a space to reflect on personal and collective connections to the landscape, to sculpture, and to each other.

At the end of each workshop, each group chose two abstract sculptural forms that they felt represented their collective spirit. I then took these beautifully dyed and painted fabrics back to my studio, carefully piecing them together to create large-scale textile hangings that brought the group's creative visions to life.

The outcome — Collective Forms — was exhibited at Henry Moore Studios & Gardens, showcasing the incredible creativity of participants from Age Concern (Ware), Herts Visual Arts (Stevenage/Welwyn), and Passport To Leisure (St Albans).

On the opening day, I also led Textile Transformations, a family-friendly workshop where visitors could create their own naturally dyed textile wall hangings surrounded by the installation, continuing the spirit of creativity and collective making.

This project brought together people from all walks of life — different abilities, experiences, and perspectives — and for me, that's what makes socially engaged art so special. Creating nurturing spaces where empathy, empowerment, and joy can blossom through creativity is at the heart of everything I do.

Alice brought an abundance of creativity, textile knowledge & skills, & expertise across audience groups to the project. Proving to be generous in sharing a variety of processes, adaptable to the needs of differing ages & abilities, & thoughtful about the space, environment & parameters we had to work with.

The project included a series of community group workshops, creating a collaborative public outcome, & holding celebratory activities around it. Throughout Alice was dynamic in her approach to sharing her personal practice in relation to given themes, proactive in her communications & creating resources, & clearly gathered & relayed new understanding about site-specific relevance, while befriending the team & holding space for participants. I look forward to when our paths cross again!
